Impetigo is contagious until treated, but after starting antibiotics it usually stops spreading within 24–48 hours as the bacteria are quickly controlled. Without treatment, it can remain contagious for days or longer. To prevent spread, avoid skin contact, sharing towels or clothes, and keep lesions clean and covered, and in school or work, return only after at least 24 hours of antibiotics and when sores begin drying.
