Symptoms of Postpartum Depression typically begin within the first few weeks after delivery, but they can appear anytime in the first few months postpartum and may gradually worsen if untreated. Early signs include persistent sadness, mood swings, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, and difficulty bonding with the baby, while more severe symptoms can develop later, such as hopelessness, loss of interest in daily activities, sleep or appetite changes, and thoughts of self-harm or harming the baby. A new mother should seek medical help if symptoms last more than 2 weeks, worsen over time, interfere with daily functioning, or include any harmful thoughts, as early support and treatment are important for both mother and baby’s well-being.
