At 8 weeks of pregnancy, an ultrasound typically shows a small embryo (about the size of a raspberry, around 1.5–2 cm), a visible gestational sac, yolk sac, and usually a detectable heartbeat, along with early signs of basic body structure forming. It is normal if some details are still not clearly visible because the baby is still very small and development is in an early stage. You are usually advised to come with a full bladder for a transabdominal scan (or may have a transvaginal scan for clearer results). Concerns arise if there is no heartbeat when expected, unclear growth, or dating mismatch, in which case doctors may recommend a repeat scan after 1–2 weeks or additional tests to confirm normal development.
